Downtown Dialogue - What's Up Downtown

TIDBITS

FACES OF DOWNTOWN

Sarah Lynch

In November of 2018, Sarah Lynch was up far too late scrolling through Facebook. It was the perfect, mindless way to tick away the minutes until she was able to sleep. As she sped through her feed, a post on the local Facebook page, the oh-oh27, stopped her. Kimber Good, long-standing employee at Assorted Goods and Candy was announcing the closure of the store at the end of the year. Sarah sat up in bed, woke up her husband Jason and declared: “We have to keep Assorted open.”

Twenty months, a grand re-opening, and a pandemic later, Sarah has not looked back. Taking over ownership of Assorted Goods and Candy has been challenging, but one of the most rewarding experiences of her life. She has come full circle, as her high school job was at a chocolate shop in Massachusetts.

Sarah and Jason moved to Louisville is 2007 from New York City with their two children, Aedan and Maggie. Jason is an attorney who loves Colorado but misses the ocean, as he would happily spend his time snacking on his favorite Assorted chocolate item, pecan patties, on a sailboat. Their oldest son, Aedan, graduates The Temple Grandin School’s high school this June and is a fan of Sour Apple Blow Pops, fudge and Bubble-Up soda. Maggie, their youngest child, will be a sophomore at Tara High School for the Performing Arts in the fall and loves candy of all kinds, but especially cotton candy, Haribo gummies ‒ she has also tried every Root Beer Assorted Goods offers and can rank them in preference order.

Sarah gets asked a lot about what is her favorite candy. She has tried everything they sell in the store (as any true professional would) and her preferences change day to day ‒ she loves candy of all kinds. This week she is especially fond of the Chicken Bones classic candy from Hammond’s (coconut, peanut butter candy sticks), but her long standing favorite will always be Cow Tales.

Assorted Goods and Candy is located at 706 Front Street, near the intersection of Front and Pine and right next to Old Friends Gift Shop. We offer a wonderful range of candies, chocolates (most of which is made in Colorado), sodas and gifts.

Coronavirus Winter Documentary
In case you missed it, here is the link to the documentary about downtown by Chris Wheeler in conjunction with Gary Shapiro that aired on 9News and PBS. 9News/KUSA-TV will also be rebroadcasting the documentary on Saturday, June 6th at 6:30 pm. Historic Preservation Building

This month in conjunction with the Historic Preservation Commission, we are featuring:

The Romeo Family House
701 Garfield St.

Anthony “Tony” Romeo built the house at 701 Garfield in 1907 out of stone brought from Marshall. He and his wife, both born in Italy, and their children, were a lively, talented, musical family. Tony changed his name from Romano to Romeo because he wanted it to be uncommon. He named his son “Phillipine Islands” to honor the then-current Spanish-American War, but his son went by “Phil”: the 1920 census listed him as “Phillip. Islands”. Tony was a coal miner, union organizer, and owner of a second hand goods store on Front Street.

701 Garfield is one of Louisville’s few stone houses. Tony bought a buckboard and a mule and wandered the fields around Marshall to find the stones for the house. Among the owners of the property were the Binks, Maxwell, Mohr, and Harvey families.

June... June... June...

What to say about June? Downtown continues to be somewhat quiet, but more signs of life pop up every day. The trees have leafed and the flowers are blooming! Some restaurants are opening for limited dine-in service, while others are still operating with only takeout and delivery. Shop doors are open and they are ready to welcome you and help with whatever you need... psst, Father’s Day is coming up! Masks and social distancing are now the norm so we can keep one another safe ‒ thank you for your cooperation. Best news is that we are still surviving and we continue to thank everyone for their support that has kept our small businesses up and running through this challenging time. Louisville Strong, indeed!

Louisville Street Faire

It is with a heavy heart that we had to announce the cancellation of the 2020 Louisville Street Faire. With each passing day, it became clearer that we would likely not be able to ensure everyone’s safety this summer. Here is the official statement from the DBA:

The Downtown Business Association (DBA) of Louisville and the City of Louisville regret to announce the cancellation of the 2020 Louisville Street Faire. While there has not yet been specific guidance issued by the State of Colorado and the Boulder County Health Department, the City has notified the DBA that that the City will not be able to permit special events involving large groups for the foreseeable future due to COVID-19. The DBA and City are disappointed, but we agree that the cancellation is necessary to protect the health and safety of all Street Faire participants and the entire community, as well as minimize the spread of COVID-19.

The DBA is working with the City and other local partners to develop alternative virtual programming and explore other ideas to provide entertainment to the Louisville community this summer. We will miss you all and miss the fun times but we hope you will all be ready when we hope to come roaring back in 2021. Please stay safe and healthy through all of this.

Outdoor Dining

On May 26, the City Council authorized staff to implement the closure of the 800, 700, and 600 blocks of Main Street to vehicular traffic for use for outdoor dining. The closure from Walnut to Elm would be block-by-block so that east/west streets and intersections remain open to vehicles. Staff is also looking into outdoor dining options for restaurants on Front Street and in other commercial areas. At the request if City Staff, the DBA has been working with the City, Downtown restaurants, retailers, and others to gather information and plan. If the closure goes forward, it is likely to begin in June and continue through October 5 unless extended by City Council or shortened due to health and safety issues.

My Saving Grace

909 Main St.
Summer has finally arrived and we are excited to be featuring Louisville’s very own artist Juni Margrie. Juni Margrie draws, designs and makes her fine porcelain and stoneware functional pieces from her studio basement at home or from ClayArt ‒ a co-op studio in historic downtown Louisville. She is an Australian potter with an engineering background, so her preference tends to be in making utilitarian pieces with good design principles. “I like the idea of my pieces being used, handled, on a daily basis. My goal is to create pieces that bring joy and comfort to our ordinary, everyday rituals at home like our morning coffee, sitting down for an afternoon snack, or sharing a meal with our family and friends around the table.” All of the hand-drawn botanical themed illustrations on the porcelain pieces are made using a ‘mishima’ decorative technique that originates from Korea. The line drawings are carved into the clay while the piece is still ‘leather-hard’, then these carvings are in-filled with some stained clay, with the excess wiped off. The illustrations are then accented with colorful underglazes that are hand-painted on. Stop by and see Juni’s work as well as other local artist’s creations. www.mysavinggrace.net
