Downtown Dialogue - What's Up Downtown

TIDBITS

Faces of Downtown

Andy Clark
Moxie Founder/Owner

Andy’s professional devotion to excellent bread started when he was just 17, when, in spite of his bad attitude and long hair, he was hired at Boulder’s Daily Bread as a barista, until the one night when the bakers needed help and he slipped into the night baker spot. That transitioned into his eventually heading up the Whole Foods Market Rocky Mountain Bakehouse for nearly 15 years. From 2012 to 2014, Andy was the COO and VP of Business Support at Udi’s Artisan Bakery. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Colorado Grain Chain.

But it was 2015 when Andy finally mustered the chutzpah to put his passions and diverse experiences together and open Moxie Baking Co., the bakery/antique parlor/musical stage of his dreams. When not baking, you will either find Andy wrestling with one or all of his three sons, hiking and biking the Front Range with his lovely wife Phillippa, or sleeping in the delivery truck in front of the Mercantile Café in Jamestown, Colorado.

“And there is hesitation, and it always remains (concerning you, me, and the rest of the gang), but, in our quiet hour, I feel I see everything, and am in love with the hook upon which everyone hangs.”

–Joanna Newsom

Historic Preservation Building

This month in conjunction with the Historic Preservation Commission, we are featuring:

The Mudrock House
613 Grant St.

The Mudrock (formerly “Mudrak” and “Mudrack”) family from Slovakia owned this property and were residents of the house starting in1903. In 1909, John and Mary Mudrak conveyed ownership of 613 Grant to their son, John G.Mudrock. He went to work in the mines at age 10, according to his wife, and worked as a coal miner for about 40 years. He retired in about 1941 from the Industrial Mine.

Of later Mudrock generations connected to this property, Albert Mudrock married Cleo Damiana in 1945. Cleo Mudrock was a much-loved resident who worked for the City of Louisville for many years. Louisville’s Cleo Mudrock Park is named for her. John Mudrock (1910-1993), who also grew up at 613 Grant, had a son, Phil Mudrock, who emerged from Louisville’s strong baseball culture to be a professional baseball player from 1956 until 1965. Mudrock’s Tap and Tavern on South Boulder Road is named in his honor.
